Separation of Powers

Hello Everyone

The separation of powers is working very well and has been since this country was created. It allows for a government that is not dictated by one person. The current state of gridlock in our nation's capitol has not been caused by the separation of powers. The gridlock has been caused by many things, not the least of which are the two political parties that continue to become more strident in their views and are less willing to compromise. The fact remains that the United States' system of government continues to be the most effective form of government in the world. Thank you for your question.

Women in Power

Hello Everyone

It is true that I believe that women are weaker than men, but I did not say they would not help make up a well run government. Women are much gentler and calmer than men which gives them the advantage to make good decisions when it comes to government. I once said about women in government, "their very weakness gives them more gentleness and moderation, which, rather than the harsh and ferocious virtues, can make for a good government." If I were to be given the opportunity to speak with Secretary Clinton and Speaker Pelosi, I would have to admit that their leadership abilities and successes have clearly illustrated that my 17th century observations that suggested that women were in any way inferior to men were erroneous. About Me

My name is Charles-Louis de Secondat, the Baron de Montesquieu. I was born January 18, 1689 in La Brède, France. I went to college and studied science and history which led me to my interest in government. I became the Baron de Montesquieu at the age of 27 when my uncle died and I then began serving as a judge. I became a writer and have become well known because of the publishing of my book Persian Letter which came out in 1721. My book talks about the lifestyle of the French as well as the church. Another book, which I am best known for, is titled On the Spirit of Law and is where I discuss my views on the government. I have a strong belief that the best government is when the people elect the officials to serve them but the power must be balanced. The separation of powers is how the government should be set up to prevent one group from gaining too much power over the others. My idea of the separation of powers led the United States and England to develop a system of government which the democracy is divided to give equal power among the groups.
